Personal Learning Plan For MMEDIA 3H03
Purpose:
The learning plan will help me to manage my time, and plot my schedule. Moreover, this will help me be successful in this class and to build my previous skills I gained from MM2H03. By planning my objectives, it helps me to achieve knowledge on specific aspects in animation. I understand that it is impossible to learn every thing about animation including use of software in one semester. Therefore, this learning plan will be a step-by-step guide in helping me achieve my goals in long term.
Goal:
My first goal in this class for this term is to strengthen my skills on three different softwares, which I learned last year in MM2H03—Photoshop, After Effect and Final Cut. Also I will start to learn how to use Flash to develop my animation project. Secondly, I would like to better my knowledge in stop motion. Moreover, I will learn two more animation techniques, which are stop frame motion in flash and silhouette cut-out. My third goal for this class will be exploring/research about animation. I’m very interested about some traditional Chinese animation format and techniques. Therefore, my research will focus on Chinese painting animation and Chinese shadow figures animation. Last but not the least, I will try my best to improve my English, in order to learn fast and read fast.
Knowledge and Technique:
- How use Photoshop to edit any picture in whatever I expected.
- How to use After Effect to add special effects on my work How to add any kinds of movements on my project fast and smooth.
- How to create a stop motion and sample frame movement by Final Cut.
- How to use flash to create an animation, and what are the basic skills about flash.
- How to identify the main idea of flash animation. What is the flash technique and how to use this technique in my own animation project?
- Identify the main idea about silhouette cut-out, and how many the specific knowledge about it and how to add this technical in my own project.
- What is the background of Chinese traditional animation? How the Chinese tradition animation developed through the timeline.
- What is the history of Chinese shadow figure animation and what kind of technology is used in it?
- Identify the definition about Chinese painting animation and understand the technique of this kind of animation.
- What did Professor Franci taught and mentioned in class?
Process:
In order to achieve my goals for this term, I will perform following points:
1. Try my best to attend every class, never be late and never leave early.
2. Read the textbook every week before attending class, and think about what I learned from the book.
3. Watch animation (video) on Youtube and Vimeo whenever I have time.
4. Go to Lyons Media Centre at least once a week and take software tutorial on lyda.com.
5. Play around Photoshop, After Effect and Flash whenever I’m free.
6. Do some research online and ask questions to professor when I get confused.
7. Complete every in-class activity, and try to do some extra exercises if possible.
8. Try to go to some professional media art events.
9. Work hard on assignments, practice and get experiences from practicing.
10. Update my blog frequently and try my best to post as much valuable posts as possible. (It will be a good way to improve my English as well.)

Self-evaluation:
Quantity:
17 post (One is introduction of my self)
Content:
I tred my best to make the thesis and the purpose of all my post be clear, and totally follow the requirement. The content was full with specific details.
Organization
I made every post be organized. (classify to 7 different parts, and totally follow my timeline.)
I made very big and clear title for each post. I used the italic, the bold and multi-color in each of my post.
-Attitude:
I totally done everything (up to week 7) before the class.
Everything is totally follow the learn plan and timeline. (week by week)
-Quality:
I tried my best to write every sentence (since my english is not good, I edited each post several time by my self after i finished them. Sometime, i also found some friend help me to edit my writing.)
In my opinion, I analysed pretty good for every writing. (It make sense for myself and my friends.)
Most post were more than three paragraphs (Some of post were written in point form, but they were very specific and long. Only exercise one and two were one paragraph).
Other comments:
- I developed my skill of how to use the Photoshop and the after effect. (work on my assignments and exercise; take tutorial online; do some practice during the free time).
-I learned how to use the flash and used it to work on my assignment one.
-I knew the background of Chinese traditional animation, and how the Chinese tradition animation developed through the timeline.
-I did not miss any class, and pay attention during every class. (Only late once, for rendering the project in the media lab with my group.
-I read the textbook for this class.
-I went to two event, one was in the Mcmaster art museum, the other one in the downtown Toronto.
-I watched some fantastic animation video during the class, also watched a lots of animation video outside of class.
Overall:
From the beginning of this term till the reading week, I did not bad in my animation 3H03 class. I totally followed my timeline to budget my time. I also tried my best to achieve all the items that I mentioned in my learn plan.
For the blog part, I believe I could got around A~A+ based on my own rubric.
For the class, I did not miss any of them. However, I was late once, for rendering my project. A few times I felt sleep, but mostly I paid attention to the class. I did not talk a lot during the class, because my english is really limited and be honest, some parts of class was misunderstanding for me.
For the assignments and exercise, I took care for all of them. I tried my best to do well for my own part and to cooperate with my teammates. The group work in our group was pretty successful, everybody was happy to help others, and was able to learn form others.
All in all, I am pretty satisfied with my expression in the animation class so far. I will keep my passion and enthusiasm, do a better job in the next phase of this class.
Self-Evaluation
Skill/knowledge:
- I developed my skill of how to use the Photoshop. (Work on my assignments and exercise; take tutorial online; do some practice during the free time).
-I learned how to use the flash and used it to work on my assignment one.
-I knew the background of Chinese traditional animation, and how the Chinese tradition animation developed through the timeline.
-I knew the background of Chinese shadow figure animation, and how the Chinese shadow animation developed through the time.
-I knew how the Chinese animation origin and developed by researched and studied the life of great animator in Chinese.
-I improved my skill of using the after effect. I used after effect for both of my assignment and assignment. I also did some exercise to practice this software. Moreover, there were two very useful after effect tutorials that hold in lecture, which were very helpful.
-I developed my skill of using the premiere, because I have used the premiere for both of my assignment. When I finished my work in flash or in after effect, I input all the file in the premiere combined and organized them there.
Lecture:
-I did not miss any class, and pay attention during every class. (Only late once, for rendering the project in the media lab with my group.
-I read the textbook, and read the reading requirements for this class.
-I went to three events for this term. Two was in the Mcmaster art museum, the other one in the downtown Toronto. Those events helped me to understand the contents of lecture better.
-I watched some fantastic animation video during the class, also watched a lots of animation video outside of class. Those video gave me many ideas for my own assignment, and I learned a lot of skills and techniques from them.
Assignment:
Concept and Ideas:
I created the idea of my first assignment. Since, it was contrasting the Chinese culture and Canadian cultural, all they Chinese frame was designed by me.
For assignment number two, I did not gave the main idea of the project, but I really tried to add some effect and content in it, in order to make it looks better.
Refinement of the Concept:
I really took care for all of my animation projects. I tried my best to make the animation not only looks vividly and smoothly, but also connect with the theme of the project. I made a lot of specific work for my project, which included 3D effect for project one, and color contrast and shadow effect for assignment two.
Skills:
We always combine more than one technique in our project. I was focused on the animation part mostly. I produced most of the animation and effects that created by after effect. I also worked on some parts of animation, which created by flash. The animation was pretty smooth and natural, but still not good enough. I still had a huge distance with those professional animators and masters of software.
Presentation:
I did badly on the presentation part. Since my English was horrible, during the presentation, I most listening rather than speaking. Only a few times, I tried to answer questions from classmates. Sometimes I even did not understand what classmates mention to our group. However, I tried my best to do what I could and kept a good mental outlook.
